Courtesy University of Pittsburgh Following an outstanding year on the field for the Pitt football team that included a 10-win season, top 15 ranking in the final polls and victory in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, the Panthers earned yet another distinction today, this one for achievement in the classroom. Ten Pitt players were named to the Big East Football All-Academic Team, which recognizes student-athletes who have posted a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better and completed a minimum of two semesters of academic work. Leading Pitt’s honorees is linebacker Adam Gunn (Vandergrift, Pa./Kiski Area), who was named to the All-Academic Team for a third time. Gunn recently completed his master’s degree in Pitt’s Graduate School of Public and International Affairs. The Panthers’ two-time All-Academic Team honorees include kicker Luke Briggs (Midland, Mich./Herbert Henry Dow), defensive lineman Myles Caragein (Pittsburgh, Pa./Keystone Oaks), fullback Henry Hynoski (Elysburg, Pa./Southern Columbia), quarterback Andrew Janocko (Clearfield, Pa./Clearfield Area) and offensive lineman John Malecki (Murrysville, Pa./Franklin Regional). Four Panthers were honored for the first time: receiver Jonathan Baldwin (Aliquippa, Pa./Aliquippa), punter Pat Costello (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield Area), linebacker Steve Dell (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Santaluces Community) and receiver Mike Shanahan (North Huntingdon, Pa./Norwin). Freshman tailback Dion Lewis’ status as the top newcomer in college football continues to be solidified with his growing list of honors. Lewis (Albany, N.Y./Blair Academy [N.J.]) was the only true freshman named to The Associated Press All-America Team that was announced today. He was a second-team All-America selection by the AP as well as by Sporting News, CBSSports.com, SI.com, Rivals.com and Scout.com. Lewis has also been named the National Freshman of the Year by CBSSports.com and the Offensive Freshman of the Year by CollegeFootballNews.com. The 5-foot-8, 195-pound Lewis enters the Meineke Car Care Bowl against North Carolina as the country’s third-leading rusher (136.67 yards/game). His 1,640 total rushing yards are the most ever for a Big East freshman. One of the players who helped open holes for Lewis, junior offensive tackle Jason Pinkston, also has garnered national accolades. Pinkston (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) was named a second-team selection on the SI.com and Rivals.com All-America teams. Senior tight end Dorin Dickerson (Imperial, Pa./West Allegheny) last week was named to the Football Writers’ 25-player All-America Team after catching 45 passes for 508 yards and 10 touchdowns. He additionally has been named a first-team All-America selection by CBSSports.com and is a second-team honoree by the Walter Camp Football Foundation and Sporting News. Sophomore Jonathan Baldwin gained recognition with his 1,000-yard receiving season (1,080 yards, 20.0 yards per catch) and was named a third team All-American by Rivals.com. On the other side of the ball, junior defensive end Greg Romeus was named a third team All-American by Sporting News and Rivals.com. Romeus has compiled 40 tackles, 10.5 TFLs and eight sacks. Courtesy of PittsburghPanthers.com Pittsburgh mayor Luke Ravenstahl has declared Friday in Pittsburgh “Turn it Blue Day” in anticipation of the Pitt football team’s Saturday night showdown with Notre Dame at Heinz Field. The Panthers, ranked as high as No. 8 in the country, will face the Fighting Irish in front of a soldout crowd and national ABC television audience. Pittsburghers are encouraged to wear their Pitt Blue on Friday to get ready for the game. Fans should also wear their Pitt Blue to Heinz Field Saturday night as Pitt and Pittsburgh are showcased to the rest of the country. “This weekend, let’s `Turn it Blue’ and show our support for our own hometown team as they take on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame,” Ravenstahl said. “We’ll have the eyes of the nation watching us, and I’m confident that with the talent we have this season and with the support of Pitt fans, our team will be successful. The Panthers are 12th in this week’s Bowl Championship Series ratings, their highest BCS listing ever. Pitt achieved its lofty rankings after winning five consecutive games to improve to 8-1 on the year, its best start since the 1982 Panthers, led by quarterback Dan Marino, also started 8-1. The Pitt-Notre Dame game is being televised as part of this week’s ABC Saturday Night Football package and will be aired locally on WTAE-TV, channel 4. The Panthers (8-1, 5-0 Big East) are ranked No. 8 in the AP poll and No. 9 by the coaches. The Bowl Championship Series standings have Pitt No. 12 this week, its highest BCS rating ever. With the announcement of today’s polls, Pitt is enjoying its first Top 10 ranking in November since 1982, when the Panthers were led by senior quarterback Dan Marino. The Panthers are in the midst of one of their winningest stretches in recent memory. Dating back to its monumental victory over BCS-bound West Virginia to close the 2007 season, Pitt has won 18 of its last 23 games. Pitt returns to action this Saturday, Nov. 14, against Notre Dame at Heinz Field. The game will be an ABC national prime-time telecast and kick off at 8 p.m. The Pitt football team continued its climb up the national polls today, earning a No. 14 ranking in both the Associated Press writers and USA Today coaches polls. In the weekly Bowl Championship Series standings, Pitt moved up to No. 13, its highest BCS rating ever. The Panthers are off to their best start since 1982 with a 7-1 overall record. Pitt also boasts a 4-0 Big East record and is tied atop the league standings with Cincinnati. (The Bearcats are ranked No. 4 by the Associated Press and No. 7 by the coaches. They are fifth in the BCS ratings.) Dating back to its monumental victory at West Virginia to close the 2007 season, Pitt has won 17 of its last 22 games. That victory cost the Mountaineers a shot at the national championship. Pitt returns to action this Saturday, Nov. 7, against Syracuse at Heinz Field. The game will kick off at noon and will be televised on ESPNU. The Panthers earned a come-from-behind 34-24 win last year in the Carrier Dome, knotting the all-time series between the two longtime rivals at 30 wins apiece with three ties. By David Whipkey Dorin Dickerson has finally found a home on the Pitt football team. As a high school recruit, Dickerson was wooed by college football programs such as Florida, Michigan, Notre Dame and Penn State. But the West Allegheny product saw an opportunity with Coach Dave Wannstedt and the Panthers. He stayed home and signed with Pitt, beginning an odyssey that perhaps even he could not imagine. Dickerson saw time on special teams, receiver and even linebacker. Flash forward to 2008-09, Dickerson was moved to tight end. The rest, so far; has been sweet history. The senior is enjoying a season that may put him on many NFL team draft boards next spring. Dickerson has caught 27 balls for 274 yards in seven games this season. His eight touchdown catches have put him atop both the Big East and the country in regards to scoring receptions. Dickerson has notched at least one touchdown catch in five of Pitt’s seven games this season. His seven-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Bill Stull pulled Pitt into a seven-all tie with Rutgers on Friday night. Dickerson finished with 42 yards receiving on six catches in Pitt’s 24-17 win over the Scarlet Knights. The 2009 John Mackey Award will be announced on Dec. 10. Semifinalists will be announced on Nov. 16 with the finalists being announced one week later. Kris Wilson was a finalist for the John Mackey Award in 2003. He is now a member of the San Diego Chargers. Pitt is now ranked 19th in the USA Today Coaches Poll, 20th in the Associated Press Writers Poll and 20th in the first Bowl Championship Series rankings that were released Sunday. The Pitt football team surged into the national Top 25 polls today, earning a No. 19 ranking in the USA Today coaches poll and No. 20 ranking by The Associated Press. Pitt improved to 6-1 overall and 3-0 in the Big East Conference following a 24-17 victory at Rutgers on Friday. Prior to this weekend’s games, Pitt was out of both Top 25 listings, placing 26th in the AP poll and 28th in the coaches poll. Pitt is one of three Big East teams in the Top 25 this week, joining Cincinnati (No. 5 AP/No. 6 USA Today) and West Virginia (No. 22 in both polls). The Panthers last appeared in the Top 25 leading up to their 2008 Sun Bowl game with Oregon State, ranking No. 18 by the AP and No. 21 by the coaches at the conclusion of the ’08 regular season. Winners of 16 of its last 21 games, Pitt returns home this Saturday, Oct. 24, to host Big East foe South Florida (5-1, 1-1) at Heinz Field. Kickoff is set for noon.
